The NGX All-Share Index is the broad measure of the Nigerian Exchange. It tracks a wide set of listed companies rather than a single stock, so it reflects the general movement of the market as a whole.
What an all-share index measures
A composite index combines the prices of many listed companies into a single series. Each constituent contributes according to the index methodology, which weights companies by size and adjusts for corporate actions. The result is a summary of how the market is behaving rather than a snapshot of any one business.
Why it is a ratio, not a share price
The index is expressed relative to a base date, where the starting level is set by convention. Every later reading is a ratio to that base, showing how the combined value of the constituents has changed over time. It is not the price of a share and cannot be bought or sold directly. A level of the index tells you how far the market has moved from its starting point, not what any company is worth.
How a reader can use it
- Judge the direction of the whole market rather than the fate of a single stock.
- Compare how a particular share behaves against the broader market.
- Understand the context in which individual holdings move.
Limits to keep in mind
The index says nothing about your own shares. A portfolio can fall while the index rises, or the reverse, because holdings differ in weight, sector and timing. The index is a market-wide reference, not a verdict on any personal position. Read it as a broad signal, and treat company-level information separately.
How the NGX All-Share Index works
The NGX All-Share Index is a market-wide index: it follows the listed shares as a group, not one company.
Its level is a ratio to a base date, so it shows the direction of the market over time, not the price of a single share.
Constituents, weights and reviews are set and announced by the exchange; read them on the official NGX pages below.
